DRINKING ST GEORGE’S HALL

We celebrated St. George’s Hall’s unique live music heritage of Rock β€˜n’ Roll, Bhangra, and Bassline through a soundscape, set, and three β€˜live’ water kefir drinks with flavours inspired by these stories. We collaborated with Cultures in Saltaire to create our bespoke bubbly drinks.

Playing on the β€˜live’ element of this playful installation, we captured the sounds of the drinks as they were brewing, and commissioned local sound artists to sample with them live as part of the event.

  • Set

Taking over the ground floor of St George’s Hall, we created a bar and water kefir brewing area alongside a performance space for live music.

Our set was built and designed in collaboration with Jenna Greenwood, who brought together the aesthetics of 50s rock n roll, 80s bhangra, and 2000s bassline into the signage and drinks labels.

  • Audio

shi Blank weaved together original compositions, the music of Alaap, Sister Rosette Tharpe, Bad Boy Chiller Crew and mixes from DJ Manara with interviews with historians, musicians, DJs and gig goers, and mindful drinking moments narrated by Sonia and Harry to create a unique storytelling soundscape of the musical heritage of St George’s Hall.
As part of the installation, we offered micro-commission opportunities to local experimental musicians to perform short sets, sampling the sounds recorded of the water kefir whilst it was brewing.

  • Menu

Our drinks flavours took inspiration from the β€˜live’ elements of both music within the venue and yeast, bacteria and microorganisms present in the water kefir making process.
