EATING KIRKGATE MARKET

This playful installation took inspiration from William Mitchell’s murals in Bradford’s Kirkgate Market. We converted a unit in Kirkgate Market into an ice cream parlour that also felt like stepping into William Mitchell’s studio.

The installation featured ice lollies set in moulds that were 3D scanned from Mitchell’s murals and used flavours inspired by the materials, stories, and names of his works.

We researched the legacy of international artist William Mitchell and created a soundscape featuring Dr Dawn Pierera, Aaron Law, Lisa Brown, and people working in, and passing through, the market.

  • Set

Taking over an empty cafe unit, we created a unique ice cream parlour / sculptor's studio. We played a video of William Mitchell in his studio, showing the process of making his large scale concrete murals. Our set was built and designed in collaboration with Michelle Wren and Jenna Greenwood, combining pastel colours of retro ice cream parlours with a maker’s bench with sculpting tools and paint pots.

  • Audio

Lukas Hornby weaved together interviews with passersby at the market, fans of and experts on William Mitchell’s work with ambient music, mindful eating moments narrated by Sonia and Harry, and composition inspired by ice cream van ditties to create a unique soundscape.

  • Menu

Our flavours took inspiration from William Mitchell’s murals and the exterior or Kirkgate Market, and we created bespoke moulds of the murals inside the market to create our ice lollies:

    The William Mitchell
Vanilla coconut lolly with salt & pepper concrete sherbet

The One With All the Colour
Tutti frutti scoop in a cone, tub, or lolly

    In Search of the Pineapple
Sichuan peppercorn & pineapple fruit ice lolly
